In the note which follows the Bishop of Durham’s Preface to my “Bible and Modern Criticism,” I acknowledged my indebtedness for valuable help received from two other friends in the preparation of that work. Of these I named the Rev. Robert Sinker, of Trinity College, Cambridge. The other to whom I referred was the writer of the present volume. This fact expresses more forcibly than words my sense of Miss Habershon’s fitness for the task she has here undertaken.
In our study of either the Word of God, or the works of God, no two of us ever see exactly alike. And every Bible student will possibly question many a detail in the exegesis here offered of the Parables. But this consideration in no way lessens my appreciation of the book.
For when both the aim and the spirit of a book are right, the true student of Scripture values it, not according as it contains what he already believed and knows, but according as it suggests thought and stimulates inquiry. And the present volume will be found to be eminently stimulating and suggestive. To some readers, indeed, the perusal of it may prove an education in Bible study, by reason of the proof it gives of what Pusey aptly terms the “hidden harmony” of Holy Writ.
